Description: The name of the Archeological Park derives from the Ceiba trees that are around the monuments at the park (the Ceiba tree is Guatemala's national tree). Ceibal is located on the west edge of La Pasión river, which is considered to have been a strategic place for the ancient Maya; this glorious city was “devoured” by the jungle and now you only can appreciate some remnants as monoliths. It is recommended to begin your tour on La Pasión River, starting in Sayaxché and finishing in Ceibal Archaeological Park. The best time to visit these localities is between November and June, which is the dry season, so that you’ll evade mosquitoes.

Services: There are hotels in Sayaxché or in Flores (an hour away).

Access: Take CA-9 highway from Guatemala City; then getting on CA-13 to Flores, drive towards Sayaxché (39.7 miles). From here you can get to Ceibal and the ceremonial site by road (3.7 miles), or by traveling on Río La Pasión (7.4 miles). Another option is by leaving from Las Verapaces (Alta Verapaz or Baja Verapaz) taking CA-14 to Cobán and then going to Sayaxché.

Tourist facilities: Boat trips on Río La Pasión, and you can use the trails inside the Archeological Park.
Fees and schedule: US$ 3.50 per person for Guatemalan residents, and US$6 per person for foreigners.

Other features: The monoliths in Ceibal are recognized because of their good condition, art and beauty. From Sayaxché you can also visit other archeological sites such as Dos Pilas, Tamarindito and Aguateca.

Information and contact: Dirección General del Patrimonio Cultural y Natural del Ministerio de Cultura y Deportes (DGPCN, General Headquarters of Cultural and Natural Heritage, Ministry of Culture)

Some species: Bat Falcon, Wedge-tailed Sabrewing, Keel-billed Toucan, Red-capped Manakin, Golden-cheeked Warbler, Crimson-collared Tanager, Montezuma Oropendola.
