Description: Located near 984 feet above sea level, this place has great historic and archaeological importance, because it is believed it was a peregrination site for the ancient Maya culture. The archaeological site can´t be visited but there is a small museum where you can observe some of the pieces that have been excavated there. Inside the park you can join different activities such as ecotourism and adventure activities.


Services: Lodging (reservations are recommended), restaurant, sport fishing, canopy, snorkeling inside the caves and tubing down the river.


Access: From Guatemala City take the CA-9, and at the Km 85 junction, go to Cobán; from Cobán get on the exit towards Chisec and Petén (RD-09). Drive 29.5 miles further until you reach the entrance to the community of Samanzana (Km 259.5); turn right on a dirt road for 7.4 miles until you will find the park´s sign.


Tourist facilities:
Pedestrian trails for birdwatching, horseback riding, bike and motorcycle trails.


Some species: Keel-billed Toucan, Royal Flycatcher, Lovely Cotinga, Central-american Pigmy-owl, Grey Throated Chat;

Fees and schedule: Each activity has different prices; you can check them on their website. It is open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm from Wednesday to Sunday.


Other features:
Inside the park there is a beautiful cenote (fresh water sinkhole) with an amazing turquoise color, where Río Dolores originates. You can visit other places in Alta Verapaz or take the road to Petén.
